day 5
Today is Sunday so almost everybody here is going to church. Ghana is a Christian country, mostly Evangelical. Margaret, Alfred's wife, asked me to go with her and the kids: obviously I accepted, curious to see an African celebration. My curiosity was well rewarded since in the church the show had started. Everybody was already singing and one song followed the other with different groups of believers performing. There were many different instruments being played and the view was super colorful due to the women's dresses and their foulard. The problem was when the pastor started his speech: it was in Ewe (the local language) and it lasted more than an hour. But then at a certain point the congregation started to do the conga, and I was thrown in. We dance-walked around the church, passing by a bucket where we could put our offerings, before going back to our seats. After THREE hours of singing, dancing and listening without understanding a word, I was really exhausted! The afternoon wasn't relaxing either since we had to clean and set the classrooms up for the next day, when the kids restart school. A more positive note: I found a big piece of foam rubber which had been thrown away: I'll try to put it under my "mattress" hoping to make my night more comfortable.
